Last Word reaches Select Distinguished Club level

In the February 22 newsletter, President Carlene Falvey announced that The Last Word had earned enough points for recognition as a Distinguished Club for the year ending June 30, 2001. The Distinguished Club program recognizes clubs that achieve educational, membership, and other goals.

In the short time since that announcement, the club has earned enough additional points for recognition as a Select Distinguished Club. The Last Word is one of the first four clubs to achieve this distinction in our division, which includes 118 clubs.

Carlene notes that the club is working hard to earn the last few points needed to win the highest award, President’s Distinguished Club.

Members earn awards

In one noteworthy meeting, two club members achieved Toastmasters education awards.

On February 22, Ellen Stanford earned her Competent Toastmaster (CTM) award and Carlene Falvey earned her Advanced Toastmaster – Bronze (ATM-B) award. In reaching their own goals, Ellen and Carlene also helped the club earn points toward Distinguished Club status. Hearty congratulations to both!

Lee Yates competes in Area A4 speech contest

After winning the club-level round of the annual International Speech Contest on March 8, Lee Yates took part in Area A4 speech contest in Chelmsford on April 5.

The first speaker, Alice Barber of the Sky Rappers club in Burlington, gave a speech called “What did I get into?” She related what happened when she agreed to open her house for a House Tour in her hometown, only to learn that 850 tickets had been sold.

As the second speaker, Lee repeated her club speech about the deluge of credit card offers that come in the mail. For the year 2000, she reported receiving 75 offers with a total credit limit of $3,378,250.

The third speaker, Shawn O’Neill of the Chelmsford Toastmasters, took first prize with “The ABCs of Life.” He explained that he had learned one of his ABCs, Always Be Concentrated, when he stepped on the “truck” his little son had built from blocks. Had he been concentrating, he says, he could have offered the praise that his son was hoping to hear from him.
